The Server Labs boosts the performance of Metro de Madrid’s driver support system

The Server Labs is leading the improvement of ARCO, Metro de Madrid’s real-time information system for its train drivers. The assignment – which forms part of a 3-year project – is expected to reduce CPU usage.

Madrid, 27th April, 2012: Metro de Madrid has chosen The Server Labs to improve its real-time drivers’ support system ARCO with the aim to increase performance and improve reliability..
The improved design of ARCO brings scalability to the system through a new component, allowing growth in both lines and functionalities, and increasing the system’s reliability. At the same time it helps resolve capacity issues, bringing down use of CPU for the exchanged components, freeing up valuable compute power for other systems.

The Server Labs development and quality control platform - incorporating market-leading open-source tools such as Hudson, Sonar and Nexus amongst others - formed an important part of the successful execution of the project. Having already been deployed at Metro de Madrid practically no time had to be spent on setting up the environment, thus enabling a much faster development cycle.

Based on its’ in-depth knowledge of JavaEE and the Oracle WebLogic application server The Server Labs developed an optimised custom key component for the event processing. The Event-driven architecture (EDA) pattern employed in the project was key to increasing performance, taking load off the application server and the database engine by eliminating polling.

“The changes to the system have made a huge difference to the performance of ARCO and have made the system much more robust and able to support the future growth of requirements which will necessarily go hand in hand with the continuous extension of Metro de Madrid’s network”, comments Paul Parsons, CTO of The Server Labs. “On top of it the system’s increased reliability will require less support and intervention and allow Metro’s IT department to dedicate more time to new projects rather than restoring system issues.”
