Gaia has been launched into space

The Server Labs are very happy to have been able to contribute to the successful launch of the Gaia mission. We have been working with ESA (European Space Agency) already for a number of years on various IT projects around the Gaia mission and are continuing to collaborate.

23rd December, 2013:  Last Thursday the Gaia satellite was finally launched in Kourou, commencing its 5 year mission. The Server Labs (TSL) has been one of the companies supporting ESA in this mission since the beginning.
.
In the earlier stages of the Gaia project The Server Labs did an in-depth investigation of the practicalities of moving the Gaia project's Astrometric Data Processing to the Amazon EC2 (Amazon Web Services) Cloud Environment. With a substantial part of Gaia's data processing in The Cloud ESA will potentially make savings of up to 50% translating into hundreds of thousands of Euros throughout the mission.

We have also been involved in further projects around the Gaia mission some of which are still running.

The ambitious Gaia project aims to create a three-dimensional map of unprecedented size and precision charting the composition, formation and evolution of over one billion stars (around 1% of our Galaxy).

"Having been part of the project since the early stages we are very excited and happy to see the successful launch of Gaia into space. We are looking forward to continuing working with ESA and to make our contribution to a successful completion of the mission", said Paul Parsons, CTO, The Server Labs.
